Project awards
IA national project awards have recognised outstanding interpretive practice since 2008.
Outdoor project
An interpretive project within an outdoor environment or setting. Includes permanent or temporary projects. Awards are based on the total project budget:

Level A: less than $100,000.

Level B: over $100,000.
Indoor project
An interpretive project within an indoor environment or setting, permanent or temporary. Awards are based on the total project budget:

Level A: less than $100,000.

Level B: over $100,000.
First Nations project
A culturally-lead project that celebrates and elevates First Nations voices. The development and delivery phases should demonstrate authentic connection, collaboration and consultation with Traditional Custodians, Elders and communities.
Guided experience
An innovative interpretation program facilitated by face-to-face live interpreter that allows audience interaction in real time. May include interpretive talks, costumed interpretation, theatrical programs, guided walks, tours or reenactments.
Multimedia project
A project delivered via digital media such as an audio tour, website, mobile app, social media or podcast. A project designed for educational use will be accepted if it has a public application and works as a standalone experience.
Awards categories
The Interpretation Australia National Awards were established in 2008. They are awarded annually to recognise and reward outstanding achievements in natural and cultural heritage interpretation.
Awards are presented in two main areas - in recognition of outstanding interpretive projects and
to celebrate the outstanding contribution of individual interpreters.

Georgie Waterman Award
Since 1999, this award has celebrated the life of interpreter Georgie Waterman. It recognises exceptional interpreters who have made an outstanding and sustained contribution to the development of the profession of interpretation in Australia.
Young Achiever Award
Since 2008, this award has recognised emerging professionals contributing to the development of interpretation in Australia. It celebrates the inspiration, innovation and audience-awareness of a young individual who shows commitment to Interpretation as their chosen profession.
Frontline Interpreter Award
Celebrating excellence in face‑to‑face interpretation, this award recognises guides, educators, presenters, rangers, and other visitor‑facing interpreters who create meaningful, engaging, and memorable experiences for a range of audiences.
Interpretive Manager award
Recognising individuals who lead, guide, or coordinate interpretive teams, programs, or projects. For professionals who demonstrate excellence in strategic thinking, project leadership, collaboration, and the ability to deliver high‑quality outcomes across multiple initiatives.
